Introducing Mike Oles

Posted on

I am so excited to be part of Union Chapel’s UMC’s staff and part of this church’s future. I strongly believe our church has a lot to be proud of and that we have a crucial role to play in the life of our neighborhood, our city, and our world.

I have spent nearly my whole life both in the United Methodist Church and mostly in central Indiana. I have seen and experienced the good, the bad, and ugly! I continue to be a great believer in the Methodist movement and proud to call central Indiana my home.

I am married to Katy, whom I met and fell in love with about a month before we both graduated from Earlham College in the spring of 2000. We have three daughters now and live in a house that is adjacent to the farm that I grew up on.

I was a history major in college and have an extensive background in community organizing, social justice-oriented politics, and working with congregations to become more community-oriented. When I am not working with Union Chapel, I serve as the organizing director for Hoosier Interfaith Power & Light and also work as an estimator and project manager for my family’s excavation and site construction company.

I am a huge John Wesley fan and my other theological heroes include Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Oscar Romero, St. Francis of Assisi, Dorothy Day, Pope Francis and everyday Christians who fight for social justice, authentic community, and care deeply and thoughtfully for both each other and society.

There is so much more to say and I hope to share more with you through this blog and the conversations and friendships that we develop over the days and weeks ahead.
